Demand for foamed plastics in the US is forecast to rise nearly three percent yearly to over 3.53 million tonnes in 2005, valued at $17.6 billion. Annual prices increases of 2.5 percent are expected based on rising raw material costs and greater use in higher value-added products.

Widespread opportunities in insulation and cushioning products will stimulate demand for foamed urethane, while foamed polystyrene demand will be driven by advantages over other materials in packaging and insulation applications.

Construction will remain the leading foamed plastic market as a result of heightened energy standards and needs for better-performing and lower-cost materials. These and other trends are presented in Foamed Plastics, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industrial market research firm.

Foamed urethane demand will grow 2.7 percent per annum through 2005 to 1.81 million tons. Foamed polystyrene demand is expected to exhibit average growth of around through 2005 to 998,000 tons. Expandable polystyrene will experience particularly good growth in areas such as geofoam (land stabilization), structural insulated panels and insulated concrete foams.
