Phu My Plastics & Chemicals Company Ltd, Petronas' joint venture company with local partners, has commenced construction of a US$70 million (RM266 million) polyvinyl chloride plant in Vietnam. The plant, which will have a production capacity of 100,000 tonnes per year, is located 85km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City. Petronas has a 50% interest in the plant. The plant is due to be completed by the third quarter of 2002. VCM feedstock will likely be sourced from Petronas' joint venture plant in Kertih, Malaysia. According to Petronas, average PVC consumption in Vietnam is just over 1kg per capita versus 8kg per capita in developing countries. It is hoped that the plant will spur spin-offs from plastic molding and end-product manufacturing industries for both local and export markets. Vietnam's first PVC plant, an 80,000-tonnes/yr plant operated by Thai-invested joint venture TPC Vietnam, started up in 1997. |
