BASF has put on stream a new plant for the production of the polyalcohol ultra-pure trimethylolpropane (TMP) at its site Ludwigshafen, Germany. For the first time a newly developed BASF process will be employed, which does not generate any salt byproducts. Furthermore, the amount of formaldehyde used can be reduced by one-third

The new production plant has a capacity of 20.000 tonnes/year. TMP is an intermediate product for several polymers. In particular it is used for the production of polyester resins and polyurethanes. Further derivatives are acrylates for UV curing coatings as well as synthetic lubricants.
