Polyolefins producer Basell signed a joint venture agreement with National Petrochemical Industrialization Company, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, tconstruct and operate a 450,000-tonne/yr polypropylene (PP) plant at the Al-Jubail industrial area. The Saudis will control 75% of the venture, which should start operating in 2003. The plant will produce homoand random copolymers using Basell technology. The decision to participate in this project on the west coast of Saudi Arabia means Basell will scrap plans to participate in a similar project on the east coast signed prior to the merger of the polyolefins businesses of BASF and Shell in October 2000 that resulted in the formation of Basell. Basell is also constructing a 320,000-tonne/yr high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plant at its existing Wesseling, Germany, site near Cologne. The facility is expected to come onstream in the fourth quarter of 2003. |
