Chevron Phillips Chemical Company and Solvay Polymers, Inc. have announced the construction of a 317,500-t/y high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plant at Chevron Phillips' Baytown, Texas, facility. Start up of the loop slurry plant is slated for the fourth quarter of 2002. Chevron Phillips Chemical and Solvay Polymers will each own 50 percent of the plant, and share its production of general-purpose blow molding HDPE resins. Their respective shares of production will be marketed independently. The companies intend to build a second shared facility in the 2005-2007 time frame as market demand grows. Solvay is in the process of finalizing the merger of its HDPE business with that of BP's into two joint ventures, a 50:50 one in Europe and a 51:49 one in the USA. After this transaction (scheduled by the end of June), the HDPE joint ventures would have a total capacity of 2.2 million t/y at 7 production sites. Solvay Polymers' interest in the new plant will be transferred to the US joint venture. |
