LG Chem Unveils Long-Term ABS Expansion Plan

Korea's LG Chem Ltd. has announced a long-term expansion plan to boost acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) production to 1 million tonnes/yr by 2006. The majority of new capacity will be constructed in China. Firstly, LG Chem plans to increase capacities at its site in Yosu, Korea, from 350,000 tonnes/yr to 430,000 tonnes/yr, and its joint venture in Ningbo, China, from 150,000 tonnes/yr to 370,000 tonnes/yr. Completion is scheduled for mid-2003. Investment in Korea will focus on production of value-added specialties such as FR-ABS, heat-resistant ABS, and extrusion grades. Further investment planned for 2005 will add another 200,000 tonnes/y of capacity at LG Chem.
