BASF is to build a world-scale plant to produce Styrolux (SBS), a styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) copolymer resin, at Altamira in Mexico. The plant, which will have an initial capacity of 45 000 tonnes/yr, is scheduled to start producing at the start of 2003. It will supply customers mainly in the NAFTA countries and South America.

Styrolux has excellent of transparency and impact strength, making it particularly suitable for food packaging such as film wrap and drinking cups. Other applications include injection-molded articles such as coat hangers.

Commenting on the project, Dr. Werner Pratorius, head of BASF's Styrenic division, said: This investment will give us better access to the world's biggest SBS market. Furthermore, Pratorius views specialty resins as an important to the company's bulk plastics activities, which are more influenced by commodity pricing.

BASF is also expanding capacity for Styrolux at its plants in Europe. Recently, work on expanding a plant in Antwerp, Belgium was completed, raising capacity there by 15,000 tonnes/yr to 35 000 tonnes/yr. Early next year Antwerp will see a new 30 000 tonnes/yr facility come on stream. In addition, by the end of this year, capacity at Ludwigshafen, Germany, will be boosted from 15 000 tonnes/yr to about 20 000 tonnes/yr.
